Your Rights

Know your rights and what to do if you feel they have been abused.

Registering with your local council can make it easier to get practical support from your social services department. Read our guide to registering as sight impaired or severely sight impaired.

We can give you information, advice and representation if you feel your rights have been abused under the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act).

Find out about your welfare rights. We can give you information and professional guidance on state benefits and concessions, community care and social services via telephone, email, quick-start guides and newsletters.

We also take up cases about community care issues. We are campaigning for changes to end the lottery of community care for blind and partially sighted people across the UK.

We work with local groups to develop advocacy initiatives on local issues. Where necessary, we also advocate on behalf of individuals to resolve problems.

Jenny's story - Jenny Burgess volunteered for a disability support group run by people with physical disabilities. She was the only staff member with a sight problem. “I depended on a colleague with physical disabilities to give me a lift to work. I have far greater mobility problems than most people with physical disabilities who can drive a car, yet receive less benefit - it’s unfair and unjust.” Join our campaign to make the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance fair - taken for a ride.
