Introduction
Just consider…There are around 2 million blind and partially sighted people in the UK and at least a further 10 million people with disabilities. This includes wheelchair users, deaf/hard of hearing people, customers with arthritis, back pain sufferers and others. Many of these potential customers, including their families and friends, would love to enjoy activities such as sport, travel, cinema, museums, theatre and heritage sites, if only they had access to the facilities and services.
RNIB training programmes
RNIB promotes equality and creates opportunities for people with sight problems to enjoy leisure. We provide training and support to help businesses improve their services in the following areas:
- sport and recreation
- hotels, travel and tourism
- museums, arts venues and heritage
- theatres
- cinemas
- broadcasting.
Disability Discrimination Act
In 1995 the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) came into force. This means that all providers must make reasonable adjustments to ensure that their services are accessible to disabled people. In 2004, it will be a legal requirement to make physical adjustments to buildings to allow access for all.
Disability awareness training
We provide tailored training to ensure that blind and partially sighted people have equal access to all leisure services and facilities.
By making simple adjustments to the way your service works, you can positively welcome disabled customers, increase your customer numbers and ensure legal compliance at the same time.
RNIB offers realistic and achievable programmes:
- Disability Discrimination Act training: learn how this new legislation affects you and how to ensure that your service complies with the Act.
- Disability awareness, customer care and staff training: help your staff improve their knowledge of disability issues. Improve communication skills. Learn techniques to assist customers with a disability.
- Access visits: ensure that your building is accessible to disabled customers. Includes advice on signage, accessible information and colour contrasting.
- Technology and products: learn about the latest technology and products to help you help your customers – from talking signs to tactile maps, audio description and audio guides.
- Marketing and promotion: we can help you welcome new customers to your company with advice on where and how to promote your service, create an accessible web site and produce accessible information.
