Overview and objectives

Sight loss currently affects 2 million people in the UK and is set to double over the next 25 years due to our ageing population.

Simple tasks like making a cup of tea or going to the bathroom can be made difficult and even dangerous. RNIB wants to see housing throughout the UK that enables people to live safely and independently in their own home.

  • Suitable for: Community Occupational Therapists, Rehabilitation Officers, Liaison and Support Officers, Disabled Facilities Grants Officers, Care and Repair Officers, Surveyors, Technical Officers
  • Pre-requisites: None
  • Accredited by the College of Occupational Therapists and can be used to form part of your CPD portfolio.

Content

Aspects include:

  • An introduction to sight loss understand the impact of functional sight loss in the home, identifying and supporting people with sight loss, accessible information and communication
  • Sight Loss and Accessible Housing lifetime homes, inclusive design, RNIB guidelines and the DQR, specific housing design recommendations; colour and contrast, lighting, adaptations.

  • Respond confidently to enquiries from blind and partially sighted customers
  • Understand the impact of sight loss in the home environment
  • Identify and support people with sight loss
  • Provide accessible information and communicate effectively
  • Understand the principles of inclusive design
  • Recognise good and bad design features for people with sight loss
  • Develop housing design recommendations, such as colour and contrast, lighting and security.
