Introduction to access technology course

Summary: Gives delegates an overview of the different access technologies that are available and why people with different visual impairments need different technologies.


Description

Access Technology aids blind and partially sighted people of all ages to gain access to information of all kinds. The proliferation of information technology means that many professionals come into contact with these specialist technologies, but often do not understand their function and potential.

This one-day course will give delegates an overview of the different Access Technologies that are available and why people with different visual impairments need different technologies.

The day will present an opportunity for delegates to get their hands on equipment and software, including screen readers, screen magnifiers, OCR (Optical character recognition), note-takers, reading machines, braille output devices, video magnifiers, mobile phones and PDA devices.

Learning objectives

This course will provide delegates with:

  • a solid grounding in the types of Access Technology and their uses
  • information on creating accessible materials
  • demonstration copies of access software used and an exercise workbook.

Prior knowledge required

Basic ICT skills.
