Welcome to our programme of training and development opportunities for the health and social care sector for 2008-2009. These key events and courses are available across the UK.
Our training aims to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding of professionals working in rehabilitation, health and social care. It promotes best practice in meeting the needs of people who are blind or partially sighted, including those with additional disabilities or health conditions.
Where applicable, our courses are aligned to standards of relevant National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and post-qualifying awards.

Our courses and seminars are led by experienced trainers from either optical, rehabilitation or care service backgrounds.
Course format
Open courses
For individuals or small number applications, training events usually take place at RNIB establishments around the UK. Please see the appropriate page for dates and locations. Where dates are to be confirmed, please contact us to register your interest.
Unless otherwise stated, open course places cost £100 per delegate (includes lunch and refreshments). There is a limit of 16 delegates for most training events. Delegates will receive a certificate of attendance on completion of each full day.
Inhouse training
We can deliver the above courses on an inhouse basis for organisations, providing a cost effective way to develop your team or organisation.
These courses which are purchased by organisations take place at a location their choice and filled with their own delegates.
Unless otherwise stated, inhouse courses are charged at £650 per day for up to 16 people.
Customised training
We can also provide customised training to suit the specific needs of your service or agency. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Regional courses
We run training events on a regional basis to complement the national programme. Forthcoming events include:
- Springtime seminars in 2008: Final event: Sight loss and dementia, 19 May – Bristol.
- Supporting people with sight loss and stroke conference – takes place in Huddersfield on Wednesday 18 June 2008.
- Supporting people with sight and hearing loss course – various dates and locations in the South West. Next date: Tuesday 16 September - Bristol.
Children’s Services courses
The following courses are of interest to health and social care professionals working with children and young people who are blind or partially sighted:
- Low vision aids for children and young people – Wednesday 4 June 2008, London
- Strategies to identify and teach children with impairment of vision due to damage to the brain – presented by Professor Gordon Dutton and Dr Andrew Blaikie. Next date: Friday 6 June 2008 in Nottingham.
- Perceptual development and Flash Sonar: How blind people can learn to see through sound. Presented by Daniel Kish. Takes place in London, Birmingham and Leeds from 23 – 27 June 2008.
- Low vision in children: causes, effects and low vision aids – Tuesday 1 July 2008, Birmingham
- Visual conditions in relation to ethnicity: focus on children and families - presented by key experts in the field. Next date: Wednesday 2 July 2008 in Liverpool.
- Functional vision assessments for children and young people – Thursday 10 July 2008, London
- Introduction to low vision in children and young people – Tuesday 22 July 2008, Liverpool

David's story - David was registered blind in August 2005 and contacted social services for help. He was given an assessment over the telephone. David has not received a home visit from social services or been given any equipment. David's local society was concerned about his safety and provided him with a white cane and a talking watch. Equipped for living campaign.
