UK Vision Strategy

About the UK Vision Strategy

Summary: Background information about the development of a UK Vision Strategy.

The strategy is a VISION2020 UK initiative, led by RNIB in association with NALSVI, Action for Blind People and Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

The UK Vision Strategy is a ground-breaking initiative which has brought together people with sight loss, users of eyecare services, eye health and social care professionals and statutory and voluntary organisations for the very first time to produce a unified framework for action on all issues relating to vision, across the UK.

The UK Vision Strategy has been developed in response to the World Health Assembly Vision VISION2020 resolution to reduce avoidable blindness by the year 2020 and improve support and services for blind and partially sighted people.

The UK Vision Strategy aims to:

  • improve the eye health of the nation
  • prevent sight loss and radically improve services
  • ensure support and inclusion for those with sight loss.

In 2007, voluntary organisations, eye health and care professionals, decision-makers, as well as people who use the services came together to discuss these issues.

Launch of the development of a UK Vision Strategy - April 2007

On 4 April 2007, RNIB hosted a symposium in London, inviting around 200 stakeholders from across the UK to launch the development of a UK Vision Strategy.

The symposium produced four priority areas on which to develop the consultation for the strategy:

  • awareness, education and prevention of blindness
  • correction, treatment and the eyecare journey
  • support for independent living
  • empowerment and the inclusive society.

Read speeches from the keynote speakers and a video message from the Rt Hon David Blunkett MP in support of the UK Vision Strategy.

Frances's story - "I was sponsored for a place on the 'Finding your feet' course by my rehabilitation worker. I can truthfully say that it was the most amazing, incredible, supportive, beneficial four days of my life. I cannot praise the course or its facilitators highly enough. On the course, we learnt to accept that, yes, we were registered blind but it did not mean our life had ended. We learnt that it was a new beginning".
